Welcome to Swahili sensations

I am so happy to meet you! Karibu!

Karibu means welcome in Swahili, the language spoken widely across East Africa. The word Swahili in our name refers to the area to where we get our handmade crafts from. We will handpick and support local artisans and makers from within the area where Swahili is spoken. That means most of our item are from Tanzania but you may also occasionally see things from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

We love sensations - creating a feeling of something very exciting or interesting and awakening all your senses. It’s something we can feel within our bodies; when we touch a hand carved bowl, when we feel the weight of a beaded necklace against our skin, when we see the beautiful throw on our couch. If you close your eyes, you may even hear the stampede of the wildebeest, smell the dusty roads, and feel the heat of the African sun.

Tribal Crafts refers to the many tribes across Tanzania and Africa. In Tanzania alone there are more than 120 recognised tribes and many of them have specialised in different crafts and gained expertises according to where they live or what has traditionally been produced in their area. For example, the Maasai people are masters of beading. Many of our beaded jewellery comes from artisans with a Maasai heritage.

It is always an experience to visit Africa - and I’d love to take you with me. Soon we will be offering guided safari tours across Tanzania seeing the animals and the nature but also visiting some of the artisans you have helped gaining a livelihood. It will be an amazing experience!

Come with us on our journey.
